Whether your client is a healthy eating fan, a foodie or a budget conscious family, it’s important to make sure you are recommending the right kitchen appliances to cool and preserve their food. With millions of tonnes of food being thrown away every year because it is not used in time it is not surprising that the core focus of kitchen appliance manufacturers has been prolonging the lifespan of food when designing food preservation appliances. Plus, the desire to buy more fresh food in order to eat a more healthy and balanced diet has meant consumers are more aware of food storage and wastage, meaning that kitchen appliance manufacturers have had to create ever more sophisticated methods of preserving food.
Here are six facts about food preservation kitchen appliances
1. The features
Reducing temperature fluctuations, specific temperatures and humidities for food types and twin compressors to avoid the transfer of food flavours from fridge to freezer and vice versa have all been achieved as a result of the improvement in food preservation technology. Other features developed by kitchen appliance manufacturers include systems to remove bacteria, LED lights to simulate daytime conditions and stop loss of vitamins, as well as No Frost freezers.
2. The technology
At the heart of food preservation lies sensor technology to ensure constant temperatures and airflow are maintained and to keep the correct humidity for meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables even when the door is open. Sensor technology also drives quick chill and quick freeze functions.
3. Purifying the air
Air purification systems are key when it comes to many of the latest kitchen appliances to keep bacteria and odours at bay. Some have antibacterial technology incorporated into the air system, others use negatively charged ions to remove bacteria, mould and odours and some have even turned to space technology developed by NASA which uses titanium dioxide crystals to create an ultra violet light to clean the air of odours, bacteria and ethylene to extend the life of fresh foods.
When it comes to frozen food preservation, no frost is a key feature for a refrigerator or freezer. Once the realm of the top and mid-consumer market, this is now becoming more mainstream. Many consumers don’t want the hassle of defrosting their kitchen appliances and so this provides a great opportunity for designers to up-sell to a frost-free appliance.
As the trend grows for people to do bigger shops, especially to maximize online grocery shopping and avoid doing so many trips to the shops there has been a resulting growth in the demand for larger capacity refrigeration. US style and multi-door fridge freezers continue to be popular but also taller units are now becoming available. Tall fridge freezers are perfect for smaller kitchen spaces, allowing consumers to increase capacity by expanding height without compromising on width.
Many kitchen furniture manufacturers offer custom specifications making it easy to include a non-standard size appliance in your kitchen designs. Use 2020 Fusion to combine the trend for featuring a wall of units with a taller than average appliance that offers larger than average capacities.
6. Connected appliances
As kitchen appliance manufacturers start to embrace the Internet of Things (IoT), kitchen designs for the smart connected home is becoming more mainstream. Some kitchen appliances now allow users to identify what is in the fridge, remotely and to track expiry dates. Or they can use an app to monitor and adjust settings and obtain a shopping list of food that is running low or about to expire.
